HIDE SUZUKI
HAIR
HEADPIECES STORY
FOR COMME des GARÇONS
In mid-2020, HIDE SUZUKI started to create his original headpieces in Brooklyn, NYC under Covid-19 lockdown. As he has temporarily come back to Japan to renew his US Artist Visa, he saw Rei Kawakubo on the television being interviewed at her 21FW collection, saying what we need now is creation. It was quite impressive and led him to meet with his own reason to create something what can answer to Rei Kawakubo's creation. Soon, his tiny hostel room in Asakusa turned into an atelier filled with various objects. These works are based on classical hair arrangement, but thanks to the building material he uses, an almost impossible hairstyle was born. What is the beauty of hair? Throughout human history, we have expressed beauty by making our hair stand against gravity. These headpieces have achieved another way of beauty by putting together and shaping the materials into a unique silhouette with a textured surface. They are like new forms of life born in between dreams and reality and are like a symbol of human creation to conquering nature. We need a creation in the face of disaster. If it brings us to a better future, why not do something new now.
